The highs and lows from COP27

December 2022

With this year’s COP being held on the African Continent in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Gray Maguire from the South African office represented CNG to consult with and advise negotiators, adding our wealth of experience in carbon markets to their perspectives and positions. Gray also had the opportunity to host an NBI event at the South African Pavilion, where he covered the business case for Carbon Finance Deployment in Adaptation Programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa.

When asked, this is what Gray had to say when arriving back home from Egypt, “COP27 was unfortunately disappointing on several fronts – A year ago at COP26 in Glasgow, the mantra to “keep 1.5 alive” held sway, referring to the imperative of keeping global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees centigrade. At this COP, a new, far less catchy slogan has begun to insinuate itself into the language of the day – “Every fraction matters” which has alarming implications for humanity’s future.

There was much buzz around the creation of a ‘Loss & Damage’ facility that will theoretically compensate developing countries for the financial costs stemming from climate induced natural disasters, but it’s easy to see how this is merely resigning ourselves to rather paying for these disasters, instead of taking the actions required to avoid them.”

In a recent Anthesis Group ‘Activating Sustainability’ Podcast – “Can we keep 1.5 Alive?” Host Chris Peterson was joined by our team of experts: Gray Maguire, Carbon Project Manager, Jos Cozijnsen, Carbon Specialist, and Associate Director Bianca Nijhof to discuss the latest insights from the COP27 climate talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. As a group, our focus is to strive for further nature-based solutions, to increase awareness around these solutions and develop carbon projects that aim to combat the ever increasing risks caused by climate change.
